The scalpel is one of the most frequently used tools during the civil war. The main use for these scalpels is to remove the bullets from the wounded.  There are eight different scalpels. All have their own unique use. The curved one is used to dig the bullets out. The straight edged instrument is used for incisions and dissections. They used the saw for amputation and the little metal rod ends to stitch the wounds. The scissors for cutting the string or yarn were used for the wounds they stitched. Some of the most used tool for the cuts even the soldiers could have held was the wrap they used to cover the wounds. Some of the stretchers they would use were sometimes just wood. They would sometimes even use coffee tables, or even blankets. They would have them bite bullets to take pain away from amputation though they did have pain relievers.
